ENCINITAS (CNS) - An Encinitas car club is being credited Friday with catching a suspected purse snatcher after he targeted a woman in a department store parking lot, where the club was meeting, authorities said.
Fletcher Everingham Calen of Escondido was arrested Thursday night after eight car club members chased him down in the parking lot of the Ross department store at 1038 N. El Camino Real, said San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Anthony Boyle.
Shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday, the club was meeting in the parking lot when members heard a 52-year-old woman's screams for help, Boyle said.
Calen allegedly snatched the woman's purse from her shoulder as she sat in her car with her door open.
The purse was recovered, and Calen was arrested and booked into the Vista jail on suspicion of felony robbery and possession of stolen property, Boyle said. The suspect had with him property stolen in an unrelated crime.
