New Year's Eve checkpoints result in city-wide arrests

Posted: Updated:

POWAY (CNS) - Fourteen people were arrested during a drunken driving crackdown in Poway, including one who left his car and tried to run away from a checkpoint, San Diego County sheriff's deputies said Sunday.

The city-wide operation included a drunken driving checkpoint on the Poway Road and Springs Parkway from 7 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. today, as well as multiple drunken driving saturation patrols in the surrounding area, Lt. Jose Sanchez said.

Ten people were arrested during the checkpoint. Three were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, three others for driving on a suspended license and four on drug related charges.

Deputies impounded nine vehicles, including one after the driver ran from his vehicle just after entering the checkpoint, leaving it blocking a bicycle lane, Sanchez said.

Additionally, drunken driving patrols yielded four arrests. All four motorists were booked for suspected drunken driving, including one for driving while on probation for driving under the influence, he said.
