Man who killed teen girl to spend life in prison

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A man who fired a shotgun into a San Diego neighborhood park in 2010, killing a teenage girl, has been sentenced to 64 years to life in prison.

Luis Francisco Barron was convicted in November of first-degree murder in the death of 15-year-old Joanna Vargas and assault with a firearm in connection with a confrontation shortly before the slaying.

U-T San Diego says a judge on Friday sentenced Barron to the maximum term.

Vargas had sneaked out of her home to meet her boyfriend and was dancing in his arms when she was fatally hit.

During the trial, a prosecutor argued that Barron saw the dancing teens and specifically targeted them.

Barron later stood and apologized to the victim's family.
