African crane to be returned to So. Cal owner

Posted: Updated:

ENCINITAS, Calif. (AP) - There's a happy ending for Cranium the crane in San Diego County.

An Encinitas woman found the 3-foot-tall East African crowned crane in her driveway on Saturday. It honked at her but she managed to coax it into her garage and called animal control officers.

They took it to a shelter.

The gray female with the brushy crest doesn't migrate so authorities suspected its owner was nearby. Hap Hansen, who lives a block away, heard media reports and came forward Monday. He'll get her back Tuesday.

Hansen bought Cranium at a bird store. He tells U-T San Diego that Cranium was due to have her wings trimmed when she flew over a 6-foot fence and escaped from his yard on Saturday while he was away on business.
