SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The discovery of a suspicious-looking package in a shopping cart on a Kearny Mesa sidewalk prompted a several-hour road closure Tuesday while a bomb squad destroyed the object and determined that it had been harmless.
The discovery of the white parcel, which was about the size of a lunchbox, near a city-schools office complex in the 7300 block of Ronson Road was reported shortly before 11:30 a.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.
Police blocked off the road in the area while an explosives team was en route, SDFRD spokesman Maurice Luque said.
The bomb squad examined the object, then used a water cannon to blow it apart about 1:30 p.m., Luque said. The package turned out to have been made of paper and plastic packing foam wrapped in tape, possibly meant to resemble a makeshift explosive device, the spokesman said.
No evacuations were required, Luque said.
