EL CAJON (CBS 8) - The Kniffing family's roots grow deep in the San Diego landscape.
"My father, my uncle started Kniffing Brothers Nursery in Mission Hills," Ted Kniffing said.
For the past 28 years, Kniffing's Nursery has been nestled in the Blossom Valley area of El Cajon.
"We probably have the largest selection of roses in Southern California, and probably have the largest selection of fruit trees," Ted said.
The seed to grow into the family business was planted in Ted Kniffing a generation ago.
"When I was eight year old, my dad gave me a pair of pruning shears and I started pruning roses and trees at the time," he said.
Today at age 77, Ted still does business the old-fashioned family way, growing his barefoot roses in shavings beds.
There are more fruit trees here than Adam and Eve ever saw in their garden.
"Apples, pears, peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, persimmons -- every kind of fruit tree you can think of," Ted said.
Although these days a lot of Kniffing's customers are cherry picking.
"This is my hottest item of all the fruit trees, including citrus and avocado that we are selling now, is cherry trees," he said. "One fruit tree can have 5,000 cherries on it."
In Blossom Valley, a family nursery continues to thrive they only way they know how, by nurturing both plants and customers.
