Anonymous donor guarantees San Diego library

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - An anonymous donor has guaranteed $15 million needed to finish construction of a new library in downtown San Diego.

U-T San Diego says the $185 million project can continue without the city having to tap its operating budget for completion money.

The nine-story domed building is being built in the East Village through a combination of city, school, state and private funding. Opening next year, it will include a charter school, auditorium, art gallery, café and rooftop garden.

Construction began last July even though the city was short about $32 million. U-T San Diego says a private fundraising group promised to raise the money by this month but fell short.

The anonymous donor will plug that gap.
