Is a serial predator prowling Escondido?

Posted: Updated:

ESCONDIDO (CBS 8) - For the second time in three weeks, Escondido police find themselves investigating yet another early morning violent sexual assault.

The latest attack happened early Saturday morning while the victim was walking down Escondido Boulevard near the 200 block of West Grand Avenue when she was grabbed from behind and dragged into an alley around 4:30 a.m. and raped.

A surveillance camera atop a satellite dish installation business captured police officers coming to the crime scene, but there's no sign of a suspect, described as a Hispanic male between 30 and 35 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, 170 pounds with a muscular build, black hair and brown eyes.

The description sounds eerily similar to a man believed to be responsible for the early Christmas Day rape of a woman in Jesmond Dene Park, who was also grabbed from behind around sunrise. Both attacks have many Escondido women on edge.

"It's very scary because I leave here every night, sometimes I'll be alone, and it's just scary to think about," Escondido resident Amal Elfarra said

"It's unnerving. It makes you stop and think about what you do when you go out. I've already talked to my boss, we're not going to have any females in the office alone when the sun goes down. I don't want to take a chance," Escondido resident Amber Yarnell said.

While they wait to track down the suspects wanted in both brazen attacks, authorities offer safety tips to women who are out after dark in rural areas and on downtown Escondido streets.

"It's never advantageous for you to walk down a darkened alley or a darkened side of the street. Try to stay out where there's street lights, try to stay with groups of other people, and if you see somebody that makes you nervous, move to the other side of the street and move away from those folks," Escondido Police Department Lt. Chris Wynn said.
