Dozens of cars vandalized in Chula Vista

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Detectives sought Thursday to track down the vandal or vandals who slashed tires and smashed windows on dozens of parked vehicles in a South Bay neighborhood.

The rampage of roadside destruction along Hilltop Drive, Orange Avenue and nearby streets in the Castle Park area of Chula Vista took place Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, according to police.

By Thursday afternoon, officers had confirmed 50 reports of maliciously damaged autos, most of which had sustained at least one flattened and ruined tire, Capt. Gary Wedge said.

"We've got a number of calls that are still pending," he said.

In a few instances, windows were shattered and items stolen from inside vehicles, and in one case a container of transmission fluid found inside a car was opened and splashed around the interior, according to Wedge.

Investigators were following up on several leads, though they had no description of the person or persons responsible for the vandalism spree, the captain said.
