Gray whale spotted swimming next to Scripps Pier

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The gray whale migration season is in full swing, and Thursday whale watchers got to enjoy a great sighting off the Scripps Pier in La Jolla.

Chopper 8 captured a gray whale swimming next to the pier. Whale experts at the Birch Aquarium say this migration season has been unique because the gray whales showed up much earlier than expected and in greater numbers. That's great news for whale watchers.

"As they come up to the surface to breathe, you'll be watching for a heart-shaped blow that you can see.  Even from here we can sometimes see them not too far out. Even past the pier here we'll see them as they're going south," Charina Layman of Birch Aquarium said.

Every year, gray whales travel south to the Sea of Cortez to give birth before heading back north to their home in arctic waters.
