Mayor Sanders is co-chair for gay marriage organization

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Mayor Jerry Sanders joined 80 mayors nationwide in expressing support for same-sex marriage.

Sanders, who will co-chair "Mayors for the Freedom to Marry," participated in a news conference in Washington, D.C - in conjunction with the U.S. Conference of Mayors - to announce his support for gay marriage.

He said he once believed civil unions were good enough for same-sex couples, even though his daughter Lisa was a lesbian, but his position evolved over time.

"I cannot look anyone in the face and tell them that their relationships are any less meaningful than the marriage I share with my wife," Sanders said. "It seems that each year, more and more Americans are going through this same evolution as I did."

He said most of the reaction he received when he first came out in support of same-sex marriage was supportive.

"Fairness means giving people the same rights and freedoms as everyone else -- there is no such thing as fair enough, either it's fair or it's not," Sanders said. "Today, marriage equality is not just something that I support, it's something that I promote, every chance I get."

A Republican, he said he hopes more mayors from his political party will join the group.

The mayors' group is associated with "Freedom to Marry," an organization dedicated to achieving nationwide marriage equality.
