SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - As most San Diegans know by now, the large statue of the kissing couple titled "Unconditional Surrender" will be removed from the Embarcadero next month. But before it's gone, Larry Himmel has decided to take one final, sentimental look at this public art display.
You must remember this...
A kiss is just a kiss.
Between a girl and guy...
San Diego may welcome others...
As time goes by.
It's still the some old story
Of World War II glory
A case of do or die.
We welcomed home our sailors
A gleam in our eye.
The ladies they did swoon
Then came the baby boom
Of that we can't deny.
Dad came home and married mom
And then soon came I.
Some look with much dismay
At this public display.
A smooching girl and guy.
Instead of welcoming lovers
They'll bid goodbye.
They say that it's not art.
And really wasn't smart.
A sore spot to the eye.
Yet visitors keep snapping pictures
As they stroll by.
To this public display
I simply just say, "Hey."
And not a big "Oh my."
A larger-than-life glimpse
Of old days gone by.
Yes, gone is the day
When a patriot could say
Without risking a black eye
I will always love the USA
Until the day I die.
This kiss so warm and tender
A very sweet surrender
Will soon be on the fly.
Yet, we'll have this moment to remember
As time goes by.
