Volunteers will conduct annual count of homeless people

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Hundreds of volunteers fanned out across San Diego County Friday morning to count the region's homeless.

The San Diego County Regional Taskforce on the Homeless organized the annual count, which began around 5 a.m. and was expected to last until 8 a.m.

The tally is used to help the county receive federal money to address local homeless issues.

Last year, 9,020 people were found to be living in shelters or on the street countywide, an increase of nearly 6 percent over the prior year, according to the taskforce.

Slightly more than half of the total number of homeless last year were living unsheltered.
