Missing 10-year-old Tierrasanta boy found unharmed in canyon

TIERRASANTA (CNS) - A 10-year-old boy who was missing overnight had spent the night in a schoolmate's family van two blocks away from his home, and was safely reunited with his mother Saturday, police said.

Joseph Sweeney was reported missing from his home on Borderlon Street in Tierrasanta about 8:40 p.m. Friday, San Diego police said.

The boy left home after arguing with his mother and went to a classmate's house, where he slept overnight in the a van owned by that family, unbeknownst to anyone, according to San Diego police Sgt. Ray Battrick.

Joseph left the van early Saturday and headed to Damato Park, near Cowell Court, where he was spotted by a seventh grade student who recognized him. The child notified a police sergeant who was in the area, Battrick said.

The sergeant found the boy in the park, near the rim of a canyon, about 8:25 a.m., Battrick said.

Joseph was not injured and was reunited with his mother, Battrick said.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego police today sought the public's help in finding a 10-year-old boy, police said.

Joseph Sweeney was reported missing from his home on Borderlon Street in a Tierrasanta military housing complex about 8:40 p.m. Friday, San Diego police Officer David Stafford said.

The boy may have been heading into the Tierrasanta area, he said.

Joseph is white, with brown hair and blue eyes, and about 5 feet and 100 pounds; he was wearing a black T-shirt and dark-colored jeans, Stafford said.
