SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Some Serra Mesa residents are saying living close to a police station doesn't guarantee immunity from crime.
They're upset over a recent string of car break-ins in an area just south of the San Diego Police Department's Eastern Division headquarters.
It happened to Deven Doyon, again.
"They broke into the glove compartment, they took my change. They went into the center console, they went through the trunk as well. They went through everything," Doyon said.
She says her car's been hit twice in three days, once while parked on the street next to her Serra Mesa home, the second time in her complex's assigned parking spot. And she's not alone. Resident Ashley Morgan says her car's been hit multiple times as well.
"I'm very upset and disappointed in our police officers. I'm sure it's not their fault, but it's ridiculous to have this happen every night a block from their precinct - something needs to be done about it," Doyon said.
Captain Andrew Mills says the department doesn't typically send an officer out if there is no suspect description, and damage is less than $5,000. Instead, you're encouraged to file a report online or over the phone.
"Violent crime takes a higher priority, but we get to these as quickly as possible. To me, the message to the community is two things: please report to us when you've been the victim of a crime, and the second thing is it takes all of us to prevent crime. We cannot leave things in our vehicles that can be stolen," Mills said.
Meanwhile, Devin is paying another $250 to get her window fixed, hoping this time is the last time.
