SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Welcome to Groundhog Day, the only day we mark on the calendar yearly to honor a rodent, although some people will argue that it's similar to Tax Day, when the IRS comes out of hibernation to extract their pound of flesh.
I believe we don't exude the same disdain for the groundhog as we do say for other rodents like a rat, because groundhogs hibernate.
I could get along with anything I didn't see or hear from for six months, even my wife's relatives. Besides, I have a warm spot in my heart for Punxsutawney Phil ever since Bill Murray starred in "Groundhog Day," one of the funniest movies of all time. Bill played a weatherman in the movie, and I play a weatherman on TV.
But today we should pay homage to all of the hogs we've encountered in our lives. Surfers affectionately refer to longboarders as "log hogs." We've all played on basketball teams with "ball hogs." They were usually the coach's kid. And I'm sure today you shared the freeways with a few "road hogs" who drifted from lane to lane while gnawing on a cell phone. I wonder what kind of hole a road hog crawls into.
So let's celebrate Groundhog Day in San Diego. What's the worst thing that can happen? Six more weeks of this weather. I don't think I can take it.
