LA MESA (CNS) - La Mesa police Monday investigated a robbery in which a man was apparently set up by a fellow trolley rider working with an accomplice.

The man told investigators he befriended a woman on the trolley Sunday afternoon and she offered to help the victim find a proper bus route, according to La Mesa police.

Around 1:45 p.m., the man and the woman got off the trolley at Spring Street and the woman told the man to wait on a sidewalk near Spring Street and Gateside Avenue for the next bus, police said.

The woman then left the area and an older black and yellow sedan pulled up. The driver of the sedan got out and robbed the victim of cash, police said.

The driver was a man who may have been armed. Police said his right hand was in the front right pocket of his jacket as if he were concealing a gun.

Following the robbery, the suspect returned to his car and the woman who befriended the victim earlier was inside the vehicle, police said. They were last seen heading southbound on Spring Street.

Police described the robber as a black man in his 40s, around 5 feet 8 and 180 pounds. He wore a red and black jacket, police said.

The woman was described as black in her 40s, around 5 feet 3 and 170 pounds. She wore a purple shirt and had short hair, police said.

Anyone with information about the robbery was asked to call La Mesa police at (619) 667-1400.
