Man pinned by accused DUI driver's truck out of surgery

The night before the accused DUI driver who plowed into an Escondido condo heads to court, we are hearing about the real devastation in this crash.

Escondido (CBS 8) - The night before the accused DUI driver who plowed into an Escondido condo heads to court, we are hearing about the real devastation in this crash.

The man who was pinned under the driver's truck underwent extensive facial reconstruction surgery Tuesday at Palomar Medical Center. Lisa Vidaurri told News 8 her husband Tony is very lucky to be alive. She says her husband had some fractures in his cheek, and the skin from his hairline to his jaw line was torn off from the impact.

She said Tuesday's surgery was successful, and that doctors were able to reconstruct his face. "They put plates in his face, they repaired the bone and he looks great, so he's recovering now. He just got out of surgery with in the last couple hours," she told News 8 Tuesday night.

On Thursday, February 9, around 7:30 p.m., Tony Vidaurri was found pinned beneath a truck, after the driver, 23-year-old Brandon Morris plowed right through the family's yard in Escondido, and crashed into their home. Neighbors said Morris tried to flee, and that "he could hardly walk he looked so intoxicated."

Rescue crews had to use air bags to lift the vehicle off of Tony. Lisa's 14-year-old daughter, who was sitting in the living room, was also injured by shattered glass and falling debris. One of the family's two dogs, Coach, now has a green cast on his leg.

Lisa says she will be in court for Morris' arraignment on Wednesday. She told News 8, " I want him to see who he affected. This guy's really turned our life upside down. He has literally taken almost everything away. I don't have a home, my kids are having to live somewhere else, my cats and dogs are living somewhere else, my husband's here at the hospital. He's left my family in shambles."

Lisa says there are no words to express the gratitude she has for the community - friends, family and strangers - who have donated money to help with veterinarian bills and mounting hospital bills. For more information on how you can help, go to www.cbs8.com and click on the Hot Button.

Morris is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon on charges of DUI with priors, and DUI resulting in great bodily injury. He's being held on $400,000 bail.
