Underbelly: Japanese to please

Finding noodles in Little Italy has never been a problem. Finding the noodles at Underbelly, not that easy.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Finding noodles in Little Italy has never been a problem. Finding the noodles at Underbelly, not that easy.

"We're in the back of a building, underneath, and it's kind of a weird spot," Rachel Zagari said.

Just head to the corner of Kettner and Fir and look for the arrow, or the living wall art sculpture of Chairman Mao, or the upside-down signage in the main dining room.

"We're trying to steer away from the typical San Diego scene and start something new," Zagari said.

Underbelly is definitely unconventional. Oodles of noodles, but no pasta.

"It's all ramen, so it's definitely shaking up Little Italy," Zagari said.

You couldn't call yourself Underbelly without serving pork bellies. And there's one more think Underbelly doesn't have.

"We don't have spoons, so we are a slurping place," Zagari said.

And the best part just may be the price. Most ramens are priced at just $10, and Underbelly is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to midnight.

"We wanted something that was communal, as you can tell by our seating, and something that was fresh and clean-lined and new," Zagari said.

If you're looking for a new Little Italy eating experience that's slightly off its noodle, the arrow points to Underbelly.
