Tax preparer accused of ordering hit on 2

SAN DIEGO (AP) - A former Internal Revenue Service agent whose business catered to wealthy San Diego residents is accused of ordering two former customers killed to prevent them from testifying against him on charges that he siphoned off $11 million.

Federal prosecutors on Monday charged a second person - a man who was allegedly ordered to pay a hitman $100,000 for gunning down the women from San Diego's La Jolla area and suburban Rancho Santa Fe.

Steven Martinez was charged Friday with witness tampering. The 50-year-old former IRS agent faces a pretrial hearing this month on charges that he stole millions of dollars in his tax preparation business. The two women he allegedly targeted for assassination are key government witnesses in the case.
