4 injured when student's pepper spray device discharges on school bus

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Three middle-school students and a bus driver received hospital treatment Wednesday afternoon after a youth discharged pepper spray as the children were being driven through Allied Gardens.

The release of the caustic fumes occurred near the intersection of Waring Road and Zion Avenue, shortly after the bus left nearby Lewis Middle School to take about 60 pupils home, said Jack Brandais, a spokesman for San Diego Unified School District.

Medics took three youngsters complaining of chemical irritation to Rady Children's Hospital for evaluations, and the driver was transported to Kaiser

Foundation Hospital, according to Brandais, who said he did not know the severity of the patients' conditions.

It was unclear if the student who discharged the self-defense spray did so intentionally or accidentally. The pupil will face disciplinary action up to and possibly including expulsion from school over the incident, Brandais said.
