SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Holiday Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl had a combined economic impact of $26.1 million on San Diego last December, barely half of what the college football games generated in some recent years, according to study results released Monday by the San Diego Bowl Association.
According to the San Diego State University Center for Hospitality and Tourism Research, direct spending by more than 25,500 visitors for the Holiday Bowl, in which Texas defeated California, was $9.6 million. Another $9 million of indirect spending was noted in the report.
The Holiday Bowl generated 23,668 hotel room nights.
The 9,200-plus fans who traveled to San Diego to see TCU beat Louisiana Tech in the Poinsettia Bowl directly spent $3.9 million, with an additional $3.6 million of indirect spending, according to the report.
The Poinsettia Bowl generated 12,725 hotel room nights.
According to bowl association figures, the combined economic impact of the two games as recently as 2009 was $51.3 million. In 2008, it was $52.3 million.
The total declined to $30.3 million in 2010. The Holiday Bowl generated around $14 million less than the year before and the Poinsettia Bowl, with Navy and hometown San Diego State as the participants, brought in about $6 million less because so few fans had to travel.
