Woman shot in the leg at downtown Chevron

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two women got into an argument at a San Diego Rescue Mission homeless shelter in downtown San Diego early Thursday, leading one of the women to shoot the other in the leg after both were asked to leave, police said.

The shooting occurred somewhere in the vicinity of First Avenue before 5 a.m., according to San Diego police Officer Frank Cali.

The two women left the shelter, located at Second Avenue and Elm Street, and apparently continued their argument on the street prior to the shooting, Cali said.

The shooter - identified as 45-year-old Delores Smith - fled the area following the gunfire while the victim returned to the shelter for help, he said.

The victim sustained a single small caliber gunshot wound to her right left, Cali said, noting the wound was not life-threatening.

Police located Smith in the 3800 block of India Street shortly before 7 a.m. She was taken into custody on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, Cali said.
