Hunt for fugitive parolee after pursuit crash

Posted: Updated:

LEUCADIA (CBS 8) -  A fugitive parolee who led police on a high-speed chase before crashing and running off on foot may have slipped away Thursday night.

It started in Oceanside around 8:15p.m., where police were chasing a silver Dodge Ram pickup southbound on Coast Hwy. They say the suspect was a parolee who had failed to report.

The suspect sped through Carlsbad Village and entered the southbound I-5 freeway at Tamarack Ave., accelerating to speeds more than 100 miles per hour. Police backed off the chase because it had become too dangerous.

About fifteen minutes later, a silver pickup of the same description tried to exit I-5 at La Costa Ave., but failed to negotiate the curve and crashed, hitting at least two other vehicles. Nobody was injured in the crashes.

The suspect ran off on foot, prompting a manhunt in the air and on the ground in the Leucadia neighborhood.

ASTREA, police dogs, and officers on foot canvassed the area looking for the suspect. According to scanner traffic, several neighbors in homes on the west side of the I-5 called 911 to report a man running through their yards.

Oceanside Police, Carlsbad Police, and CHP all assisted in the search. Authorities were going door-to-door in nearby neighborhoods looking for the suspect.

As of 11:00p.m. there was no sign of the suspect. He is described as a white man with a thin build, wearing a white hoodie and jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
