BONSALL (CNS) - Two people were killed Sunday when a car pulled into the path of a sport utility vehicle at a country highway crossroad in North County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A red 1996 Honda Accord that was registered in Escondido was headed east on West Lilac Road about 10:30 a.m., according to CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt.

The car stopped at a stop sign at the intersection with Old Highway 395, then pulled directly into the path of a blue Ford Explorer that was headed south on old 395 at an unknown speed. The SUV driver did not have a stop sign and the speed limit there is 55 mph, according to people familiar with the area.

The SUV struck the car on its driver's side, Bettencourt said.

The Accord's male driver died at the scene. Medics tried to resuscitate the car's female passenger, but she also was pronounced dead at the scene, Bettencourt said.

Bettencourt said the female driver and juvenile passenger of the Explorer would be taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Drugs or alcohol were not suspected in the crash, Bettencourt said.
