Angelo's Burgers: Bargain breakfasts by the beach

Posted: Updated:

OCEANSIDE (CBS 8) - There is no such thing as a free lunch, or a free breakfast either, for that matter. But you can start your day with some cheap eats at Angelo's Burgers in Oceanside. For 35 years, Angelo's has been serving up humungous helpings from its five North County coastal locations.

"My customers are like my family. I've got to make them eat healthy and good," Tony Regakis said.

Tony is the Greek god of the grill alongside his son Louie. He is the purveyor of plates, the baron of bountiful breakfasts.

A mound of hash browns, three eggs, four sausage links and sauza wrapped in a tortilla. The price -- $4.99. Or if you're really hungry, dig into the Big Deal -- two large pancakes, three eggs, two pieces of bacon and two sausage links. The Big Deal will cost you $5.82.

Suppose you want to snazzy up your breakfast with a steak. Just drive in, pull up and order the steak and eggs -- a rib-eye steak, hash browns, three eggs and toast. A steak and eggs breakfast here will set you back $7.91.

"The more I see them eat the food, it makes me more happy," Tony said.

To understand why Tony keeps his prices so reasonable, you need to know a little bit about the man who emigrated from the island of Crete in search of a better life.

"No job, no shoes, no nothing," he said.

He's been able to parlay his hard work and modest pricing into one Encinitas and four Oceanside diners, living the American Dream, feeding San Diego's mainstream.
