SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man was killed Sunday when his car went off Interstate 5 south of Chula Vista, struck a tree and then burst into flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Cadillac CTS on the southbound freeway, approaching the Palm Avenue interchange, drifted off the right shoulder at about 6:10 a.m., according to CHP reports. The car went down an embankment and struck a large tree.

The car erupted in flames, and the driver inside was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP. His name was not immediately released, nor was a cause of death.

It had yet to be determined if speed or alcohol were a factor in the crash, a CHP dispatcher said.

The crash sparked a brush fire that spread into some trees on the shoulder of the freeway. A fire engine and tow trucks used a Home Depot parking lot to reach the burned vehicle and put out the fire, according to the CHP website. All lanes were clear by about 8:30 a.m., the CHP reported.

CHP officers said there were no known witnesses to the crash and asked anyone with information to call them at (619) 220-5492.
