Assembly committee says no to 'Surfing Madonna'

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The "Surfing Madonna" apparently will remain homeless after lawmakers refused to permit the artwork to be installed at a beach in San Diego County.

U-T San Diego says an Assembly committee on Tuesday rejected legislation that would have permitted the 10-foot mosaic to be installed at Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas.

Committee members said they were reluctant to overturn a decision by parks officials to reject the artwork. One member, Roger Hernandez, also said the depiction of the Madonna was disrespectful.

The mosaic depicts the Virgin of Guadalupe surfing a wave along with the words "Save the Ocean." It was removed from a railroad underpass last year because it was unauthorized work and has been seeking a new home.
