SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorist who fled a traffic stop in Point Loma Monday led a brief road chase to the Normal Heights area, where he pulled over and escaped on foot.
The pursuit began about 11:15 a.m., when the driver of the minivan sped off after a motorcycle officer stopped him for running a stop sign, according to San Diego police.
The motorist fled through the Midway area before heading south on Interstate 5, then doubling back to the north on State Route 15.
Due to the fleeing driver's speeding and reckless driving, officers backed off the ground chase for safety reasons as personnel aboard a police helicopter continued to follow the vehicle from above.
A short time later, the motorist exited at Adams Avenue, drove about a half-mile to the west and pulled over in an alley off Hawley Boulevard, police said. The driver then jumped out and ran off into the neighborhood.
Officers then arrived and arrested a woman who apparently had been riding in the van during the pursuit. They were unable to immediately locate the driver.
