Engineering dean chosen to be UC San Diego leader

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The president of the University of California has chosen Carnegie Mellon University's engineering school dean to be the next chancellor of UC San Diego.

UC President Mark Yudof said Thursday that Pradeep Khosla is his choice to succeed Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, who is stepping down on Aug. 1.

Khosla is currently dean of Carnegie Mellon's College of Engineering in Pittsburgh.

The UC Board of Regents is scheduled to vote on Khosla's appointment at its May 16 meeting.

Yudof says Khosla's accomplishments as a researcher, educator and administrator made him the top candidate after an international search.

Born in India, Khosla was raised in Bombay and attended the Indian Institute of Technology before earning a master's degree and doctorate in electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon.
