Swim-a-thon raises money for very special cause

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A very special event at UCSD Saturday helped raise money to help pay for physically challenged athletes' higher educations.

Since 1981, the "Swim with Mike" swim-a-thon has raised more than $13 million for the USC physically challenged athletes scholarship fund.

Among those getting a scholarship is Regan Linton, who lost use of her legs in an accident.

She says she wouldn't have achieved so much after suffering her injury without the program's help.

"Swim with Mike has given me the opportunity to do that. And so, it basically brought me back to life and gave me an opportunity that I didn't think I would have," scholarship recipient, Regan Linton said.

So far, more than 120 students attending more than 50 universities nationwide have received scholarships.
