ESCONDIDO (CNS) - An investigation was under way Wednesday to determine what caused a 52-year-old motorist to swerve off state Route 78 and crash into some trees, suffering fatal injuries.
The crash occurred on eastbound state Route 78 west of Centre City Parkway around 6:10 p.m. Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The man, who lived in Valley Center, was driving his 2008 Acura TSX in the No. 1 lane at about 65 miles per hour when he swerved to the right for unknown reasons, CHP Officer James Bettencourt said in a statement. He accelerated off the roadway and crashed into two trees along the highway, he said.
Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.
Traffic in the area was not affected.
Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been factors in the crash, Bettencourt said.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled Tuesday for a former San Diego police officer accused of groping four women during pat-down searches last year.
Chula Vista police will be looking for drivers talking or texting on cell phones Tuesday and through the end of the month as part of "Distracting Driving Awareness Month."
