VISTA (CNS) - A 19-year-old man who raped and robbed an Escondido store clerk, then stole the victim's car before attempting another robbery, was convicted Wednesday of nine felony counts.

Hugo Elmer Garcia faces a minimum of 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced June 12 by Vista Superior Court Judge Daniel Goldstein.

Garcia was convicted of kidnapping, rape, sex with a foreign object, armed robbery and other charges. He was acquitted of burglary and possession of a stolen firearm.

Garcia was found guilty of robbing and raping a clerk at the Family Accessories store on East Valley Parkway sometime after 4 p.m. last May 18.

The defendant stole the victim's SUV, then tried to hold up two women outside a check-cashing business four hours later on East Grand Avenue.

Garcia was arrested after being spotted sitting in the stolen SUV by Escondido patrol officers, who were responding to a report of an attempted holdup.
