Man accused of fatally stabbing ex-girlfriend's boyfriend pleads not guilty to murder

VISTA (CNS) - A gang member who allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend's Escondido townhome and fatally stabbed her new boyfriend pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a murder charge.

Christopher James Selena, 41, was ordered held on $5 million bail in the death of 23-year-old Fernando Arellano.

Deputy District Attorney Natalie Villaflor told Judge Sim von Kalinowski that Selena and his ex-girlfriend had dated on-and-off for the past five years and had two children together. The prosecutor said the defendant had a history of domestic violence against the woman.

Selena pleaded guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence in January and was sentenced to jail, the prosecutor said. Selena was released in early April and, on Saturday, broke into his ex-girlfriend's home sometime between 3 and 4 a.m. in violation of a restraining order, the prosecutor alleged.

The ex-girlfriend ran to a friend's house after waking up to find Selena standing near the bloody, unconscious victim, according to Villaflor. Arellano died at the scene.

Selena fled but was captured at his workplace the next day, according to the prosecutor.

If convicted, Selena faces 25 years to life in state prison.

A readiness conference was set for May 17 and a preliminary hearing for May 22.
