The Greenery: It's easy being green

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Don't call the dumps the dumps, because nobody in the dumps is in the dumps. Especially at The Greenery inside the Miramar Landfill.

At The Greenery, Renee Robertson is the sommelier of recycling.

"We do about 100,000 tons of organic material through this facility a year, and we recycle that back into high-quality landscape products," Renee said.

San Diegans are encouraged to drop all their green waste here.

"Any yard trimmings, branches, rose clippings, flowers," Renee said.

After the green waste is inspected, it is ground into mulch. Add some rotting food to the mix, let the microbes do their thing and you've got grade-A compost.

And if you're a San Diegan, The Greenery has a deal for you.

"They can come get mulch or compost for free. They do have to pay for the loading, but if you want to bring your own shovel, you can self-load and it's completely free," Renee said.

The Greenery's woodchips are flying out of the landfill.

"Landscapes and residents love them, because they are beautiful. They are easy to work with and they are inexpensive," Renee said.

Suzanne Cook is The Greenery's mover and shaker. She wheels heavy equipment like a Gaslamp parking valet handles a Smart Car.

"This actually can be a very beautiful place and what we do here is a wonderful process," Suzanne said.

There are no bad days at the dump. In fact, everybody is in the pink when you think green.
