San Diego agrees to settle suit in police shooting

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (AP) - San Diego will pay more than $162,000 to the family of a mentally ill man who was shot to death by police.

U-T San Diego says the City Council this week agreed to settle a wrongful death suit over the killing of Alan Kosakoff.

His father says the 35-year-old hadn't been taking his medication when he sped away from officers who tried to stop him for a traffic violation in August of 2007.

After a high-speed freeway chase, Kosakoff pulled into his mother's garage, then backed up and hit an officer who opened the car door. Authorities say two other officers shot him when they believed he was trying to run them over.

Kosakoff was hit in the head and leg and later died.
