Woman identified in Torrey Pines paraglider crash

Posted: Updated:

LA JOLLA (CBS 8 / CNS) - A woman killed in paragliding crash in Torrey Pines has been identified as a North Carolina woman.

Parmela Hargett, 52, of Inman, N.C., died in the accident shortly after noon Saturday. Her boyfriend, also paragliding, saw Hargett hit the cliffs and called 911. Lifeguards, police officers and fire crews responded. Lifeguards rappelled down the cliff and secured the woman, who was
unconscious. She was then hoisted to the top of the cliffs, lifeguards said. Emergency personnel started cardiac life support efforts, but she was pronounced dead on the cliffs, the Medical Examiner's Office reported. A fire helicopter took her body to Scripps La Jolla for an examination. So far, no one knows why or what caused Hargett to crash.

The crash, which left the paraglider suspended on an ocean-front cliff, occurred about a quarter-mile south of the Torrey Pines Gliderport, a well-known takeoff point where the ocean breeze and cliff provide an updraft.

Employees say that the gliderport has a good reputation of being a safe and reputable place to fly. While minor crashes resulting in bumps and bruises are common, fatal crashes are not.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.

This is the latest information. The original story is below.

LA JOLLA (CNS) - A paraglider pilot died Saturday on the cliffs of Torrey Pines, as San Diego lifeguards rappelled down the rocky face to rescue her from her crashed paraglider.

The downed glider, a 52-year-old woman, was reported about 12:30 p.m. below the Torrey Pines Gliderport, according to lifeguard Lt. Nick Lerma. The unlicensed aircraft came to rest suspended on a cliff above Black's Beach, he said.

Lifeguards rappelled down the cliff and secured the unconscious pilot, Lerma said. A helicopter hoisted the woman to the top of the cliffs where she was pronounced dead, he said.

The pilot's name was not released pending notification of her family.
