Arrest made in murder of registered sex offender

NATIONAL CITY (CBS 8) - The roommate of a National City man, a convicted child molester, was arrested Wednesday for his murder.

Enrique Atilano was found stabbed to death on his doorstep early Tuesday morning.

Authorities say his killer likely stole his SUV, and tried to destroy the evidence by setting it on fire.

Around 4:00p.m. Wednesday, Atilano's roommate, Joel Gutierrez, was pulled over in the parking lot of a liquor store on East 4th Street and Palm Avenue. Two other people were also with him in the car.

Gutierrez was booked into County Jail on murder charges and will also face charges for two outstanding drug warrants.

National City Police would only says that evidence connected the roommate to Atilano's murder. Atilano served time in prison for burglary, robbery, and molesting a child.

Family members say Atilano was a changed man, working two jobs, one as the apartment manager for the complex.

Police have not revealed a motive for the violent murder.

Atilano's family is asking anyone with information to come forward.

San Diego police have not officially released the victim's name, but say a burned out SUV found four miles away in Paradise Hills was his.

That SUV is registered to Enrique Atilano, who served time in prison for burglary, robbery, and molesting a child. Authorities say his killer likely stole his SUV, and tried to destroy the evidence by setting it on fire.

The victim was found stabbed to death on his doorstep.

Family members say Atilano was a changed man, working two jobs, one as the apartment manager for the complex.

NATIONAL CITY (CNS) - The manager of a small apartment complex in National City -- a man said to have been a child molester -- was found dead early Tuesday on his door step, with multiple signs of trauma to his upper body, police said.

A tenant of the complex in the 300 block of Norton Avenue told investigators he was walking by and found the victim about 1 a.m., according to National City police.

The victim's 1998 Chevy Suburban was missing, National City police Lt. Jose Tellez told reporters. He described the vehicle as possibly silver, with a California license plate No. 4ANE923.

Police withheld the victim's name, describing him only as being "middle-aged."

Megan's Law shows a 54-year-old registered sex offender lives at 319 Norton Ave. According to the website, the man committed a lewd or lascivious act with a child under 14. Police have not confirmed this information.
