Rebuilt Trestles beach railroad bridge dedicated

Posted: Updated:

SAN ONOFRE, Calif. (AP) - A wooden bridge that gave the famous Trestles surfing beach its name has been reborn in steel and concrete.

The new San Mateo Creek Railroad Bridge was dedicated Monday at San Onofre State Beach in San Diego County.

The San Diego Association of Governments spent $8 million to replace the 1941 bridge with a concrete-and-steel version that will carry dozens of trains each day.

The wooden trestles inspired the beach's nickname. The new version is inscribed with the name "Trestles."
