Report: Murder suspect tried suicide earlier

Authorities say a man who hanged himself in a San Diego County jail cell attempted suicide earlier and spent a month in a psychiatric ward.

VISTA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a man who hanged himself in a San Diego County jail cell attempted suicide earlier and spent a month in a psychiatric ward.

Michael Robles was charged with strangling his former girlfriend, Kathleen Scharbarth, whose body was found in a shallow grave last November. He used a torn bed sheet to hang himself in his Vista cell in March.

According to the North County Times, an autopsy report says Robles also tried to hang himself with a telephone cord hours four months earlier following his arrest.

He was sent to the psychiatric unit at the San Diego Central Jail.

The report, released Monday, says after Robles returned to the Vista jail, he asked another inmate the best way to commit suicide, and the inmate recommended hanging.
