ACLU queries school's bid for parents to buy iPads

Posted: Updated:

POWAY, Calif. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union is taking issue with a San Diego County school's project to equip fourth and fifth-graders with iPads - at their own expense.

The newspaper U-T San Diego reports Monday that ACLU lawyer David Loy has complained to Poway Unified School District, saying Tierra Bonita Elementary School's request that 90 percent of parents buy, rent or lease a $483 iPad and accessories is tantamount to charging an illegal fee.

Poway Superintendent John Collins says he plans a meeting with the ACLU.

The California Constitution guarantees a free public education to all children.

The ACLU has taken issue with school districts over fees for items such as textbooks. Districts say dwindling state funding forces them to ask parents to shoulder some costs.
