Bird's Surf Shed: Shed for shredders

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - An excursion into Bird's Surf Shed is a total immersion in San Diego's rich surfing heritage.

Eric "Bird" Huffman will only squawk if you call the Surf Shed a museum.

"I've been collecting them for close to 40 years now, and amassed quite a few, and I just figured it's time to share," Bird said. "Unlike a museum, you can come in here and pull one out from the rafters there. If I can get to it and it's water-tight, you can actually take the board out and ride it. I don't charge for that, it's just part of the experience of surf shops the way I remember them.

And there's a method to all this madness.

"Every board in here is specifically here for a reason. There's not a random board up here."

Bird's Surf Shed is the inner sanctum of revered San Diego shapers and shredders.

"There's a Skip Frye, one of the first 50 that he shaped for Gordon Smith," Bird said.

All hopefully to inspire the endless summer's Generation Next.

"I have a shape room in the back, where people can come in and shape their own board," Bird said.

But Bird is not about the Benjamins.

"There's not much money in surf boards. There never has been and I don't see that ever changing much. But then again, I'm a surfer. How rich to you want to be?" he said. "The surf experience is really what it's about and that's what most people recognize when they come in and leave."

This eclectic cultural center is home to a liquid legacy and one rare Bird.
