Doggie DNA test helps find irresponsible owners

Posted: Updated:

MINNESOTA (CBS 8) - Some dog owners who don't clean up after their pets could soon get nabbed by a pet detective.

Several apartment and condo complexes in Minnesota have enlisted a program called Pooprints, which uses doggie DNA to track down offending pooches and their owners.

To get the process started, property managers have each dog in their complex register their DNA or pooprint. Then, whenever any owner fails to clean up after their dog, the evidence is scooped up and sent to the lab to be identified. The next step: the owner receives a citation.

"With all the foreclosures that have happened over the years, you have more homeowners becoming renters and they have animals, dogs in particular that they want to bring with them," explained Pooprint Manager Nick Boosalis.

Property managers hope with all the new pet owners moving in, pooprints will help them get the scoop.
