More people expected to drive than fly this Memorial Day weekend

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - It's one of the biggest travel weekend's of the year, marking the unofficial start of summer.

AAA predicts more people will travel this Memorial Day weekend than last year. Travel experts say a drop in gas prices is likely the reason.

35 million people are expected to travel nation-wide, and roughly 31 million are expected to drive rather than fly. But they won't be going far, only 50 miles on average.

"Folks are economizing while still choosing to travel and one of the ways they are doing that is taking shorter trips," AAA spokesperson Cynthia Brough said.

AAA has seen a surge in family bookings for shorter vacations, exploring home town tourist destinations or areas close by.
