Sugar & Scribe Bakery: When Irish eyes are baking

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - There are more than a baker's dozen gourmet bakeries around San Diego, but only one features recipes completely compiled from the Emerald Isle.

"All of our cakes, all of our buttercreams come from an Irish background," Maeve Rochford said.

Descended from three generations of profession Irish bakers, Maeve was born to bake.

"Almost everything in here is recipes that my family has given to me," she said. "Some people went to baking school, I went to the school of Mary Margaret."

The fresh-baked bonanza to be found in Sugar & Scribe on Garnett Avenue proves that Maeve learned her lessons well.

"We have pies, but our pies are big fresh berries and a butter crust," Maeve said.

Other family favorites are baked fresh daily. Each item on the shelf is tagged with a little family history.

"Tells you the story of where I learned it or whose recipe it was," Maeve said.

With quiches to make, pies to bake and cupcakes to ship, there's more activity at Sugar & Scribe than we'll find on Saturday night at a Dublin pub.

"We're small but we're mighty. You have to look around, we have a lot of different things going on," Maeve said.

Sugar & Scribe handcrafts from scratch.

"Everything here is made by hand. Everything is made in small batches and we're really good about staying true to what I learned," Maeve said.

Sugar & Scribe is dispensing time-honored Irish traditions culled in the family kitchen.

Over the past few years, cooking has become a competitive sport and it's not just the professional chefs, who are into it.
