3.1 quake south of border rattles East County

Posted: Updated:

CAMPO (CNS) - East County was slightly rattled by a magnitude 3.1 earthquake that hit about 30 miles south of the border Saturday.

Preliminary reports from the USGS and other agencies placed the epicenter south of La Rumorosa, Baja California, about 80 miles east-southeast of Tijuana and 42 miles south-southwest of Calexico. It struck at 8:55 a.m.

The report was not immediately reviewed by a seismologist, and scientists have warned that electronic descriptions of quakes in Mexico are not always reliable due to incomplete seismic networks there.

Saturday's quake was one of dozens in a newly-reactivated quake zone in the rugged mountains south of San Diego County's southeast corner.
