SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Thousands of families and air enthusiasts were in El Cajon for the 17th annual Wings over Gillespie Air Show.

The theme of this year's show is "A Salute to 100 years of US Marine Corps aviation."

The event featured howling aerial performances and static displays of vintage aircrafts.  Seeing the old planes flying high in the sky brought back fond memories for some of the attendees.

The family friendly event featured amusement rides, games, prizes, and educational displays about the planes.

There were a few scary moments too when one pilot had trouble landing his Fairely Firefly aircraft.  The right landing gear had issues that caused the aircraft to skid off the runway.  It is reported that the experienced pilot was not injured.  The included photos of the lane and the landing were taken by News 8 viewer, Chris Moore.
