Salute to the Class of 2012

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - To the class of 2012, I send my sincere congratulations. Whether it's off to fulfill your dreams or just higher education, don't let anyone tell you that your future is not bright just because the generations before you simply couldn't get it right.

Your commencement speech contained the usual guarantee.
The future is now at hand, blah blah blah, your destiny.
It may look uncertain, but what lies ahead is somewhat known,
Because sometime in the future you'll pay off that student loan.

When it comes to the game of life, you deserve a higher seed
But you'll start a little behind because of all our greed.
While we grow into the golden years, confused and sedated,
We'll expect you to right all the wrongs that we've created.

In oh so many ways, you're the smartest generation yet.
So you'll just leave it up to you to get us out of debt.
Environmentally, your class is way ahead of the curve
An eco-friendly planet is the least that you deserve.

While you're at it, there's another problem you could fix.
See, if you can get us out of all these global conflicts.
I don't want to see any of you fighting on foreign soil
They say it's to insure freedom, but it's mostly about oil.

Be a bit more tolerant, each human has their worth
You're going to live 100 years, start saving right at birth.
Time to leave the family nest, and bid the folks adieu.
Know that it won't be long before they're mooching off of you.

To the Class of 2012, the most techno-savvy ever
Here's hoping you succeed at each and every endeavor.
On behalf of my generation for whom I just now spoke
Soon you'll be supporting us, because frankly we're all broke.
