SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Rady Children's Hospital earned high marks in U.S. News & World Report's nationwide ranking of pediatric hospitals released Tuesday.

Rady was runner-up in pediatric orthopedics and ninth in pediatric urology. The orthopedics ranking was its highest ever.

The hospital, the largest of its kind in the state, also ranked 17th in nephrology, 20th in diabetes and endocrinology, 21st in pulmonology, 22nd in neonatology, 27th in neurology and neurosurgery, 28th in cardiology and heart surgery, 29th in gastroenterology and 35th in cancer care. Nephrology involves treatment of kidney diseases.

The hospital's ranking improved in eight of 10 specialties compared to last year but, in overall rankings, Rady did not crack the top 12.

"At Rady Children's, we hold ourselves to the highest standard in everything we do - whether it's providing world-class medical care to the children of our region or discovering cures for childhood diseases," said Kathleen Sellick, the hospital's president and chief executive.

The rankings are based on data from 178 pediatric centers and a survey of 1,500 pediatric specialists on where they would send the sickest children in their specialty.

Children's Hospital of Los Angeles ranked fifth overall. Boston Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia tied for the best hospital across all specialties.
