National University announces fundraising efforts for veteran scholarship

LA JOLLA (CNS) - National University Wednesday announced an initiative to raise funds for a newly established scholarship to benefit military veterans.

To spearhead the fundraising campaign for the Veterans' Victory Scholarship, retired Rear Adm. Ronne Froman and Linden Blue, vice chairman of General Atomics, will co-chair the university's inaugural dinner in October, themed "Visionary Voices, A Tribute to Our Veterans."

"With the need for greater access to affordable higher education, we felt compelled to support this vital initiative," Froman said.

National University, the second-largest nonprofit institution of higher learning in the state, will match all sponsorships at $5,000 of above, according to Patricia E. Potter, the university's interim president.

"The talents, skills and experience of our military veterans are an invaluable resource; helping veterans apply this knowledge to a college education is part of the mission at National University," Potter said.

"Establishing the scholarship fund further enhances our services for veterans, ensuring that they can receive a quality education and are better poised to make important contributions to our workforce and community," she said.

In 2010, National University founded the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success to increase student retention, guide veteran students to educational and career goals and improve their quality of life.

The university has nine on-base learning centers in San Diego.

In 2003, the university received the Ray Ehrensberger Award for Excellence in Military Education.
